Brother Help Thyself (BHT) need your help every fall United Way – Combined Federal Campaign #8288 Maryland State Charity Campaign # 7199 Baltimore Area United Way #6166 Brother, Help Thyself, the nation's first United gay and lesbian fund for health, cultural and social service organizations was formed in 1978 out of an emergency. One of the first organizations in our area that served the gay and lesbian community was about to close due to the lack of funds. In 1977 traditional community funding sources were not available to support gay and lesbian organizations. The Capital Area Board of Leather/Levi Motorcycle Clubs took matters into their own hands and founded Brother, Help Thyself. The first fund drive was successful. The organization about to close, the Washington DC Gay Men's VD Clinic, survived, diversified, and grew into what has become one of the nation's largest lesbian and gay health providers – the Whitman-Walker Clinic. Over the years, Brother, Help Thyself (BHT) has also grown and diversified. In Addition to supporting gay and lesbian organizations, we now --- in response to the AIDS crises facing the community --- lend support to many different AIDS service providers. In the past 21 years, BHT has raised over 1.24 million dollars and distributed it to 97 groups in our community. BHT dispenses direct and matching grants, acts as a clearinghouse for donated goods and services, and serves as an information resource to the community. Brother, Help Thyself supports qualified organizations in the Washington and Baltimore areas. BHT is proud of its tradition as an all-volunteer organization. No paid staff. This permits us to operate with very little overhead . Our cost of doing business over the last three years has averaged less than 4 percent. Check BHT website: Brother Help Thyself
